A total of 1,748 tentative vacancies have been announced for the Junior Engineer Examination 2026. These roles are spread across prominent Central Government organisations.

Detailed category-wise (SC/ST/OBC/EWS/UR/PwBD) and post-wise allocations are not static within the initial notification. Instead, SSC will publish the finalized vacancy breakdown on its official portal. Candidates can check this by navigating to “For Candidates > Tentative Vacancy” on the SSC website. State-wise or regional vacancy tallies are not maintained directly by the SSC; candidates should reach out to their preferred user department for localized allocation data.

Note: Cross-eligibility is permitted. If candidates possess the necessary qualifications, they can apply for related streams (e.g., Mechanical candidates choosing Electrical & Mechanical positions, or Telecom candidates applying for Scientific Assistant/Electrical roles) in line with Notes 1–4 of the official notification.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must satisfy the specified parameters concerning citizenship, age, and academic qualifications to be considered for selection.

Nationality/Citizenship

To apply, a candidate must be either:

  • A citizen of India, or
  • A subject of Nepal, or
  • A subject of Bhutan, or
  • A Person of Indian Origin (PIO) who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, or specified East African nations with the intention of permanently settling in India (subject to holding a valid eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India).

Educational Qualification

Essential qualifications must match the requirements of individual user departments. A general overview of the educational requirements includes:

  • JE (Civil): A Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized institution, OR a 3-year Diploma in Civil Engineering along with required professional experience (specific experience requirements vary according to the department).
  • JE (Electrical / Mechanical / Electrical & Mechanical): A Degree or Diploma in the respective Engineering stream (Electrical, Mechanical, or Automobile Engineering). Professional experience is required for certain organizations.
  • JE (Telecom): A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Technology in streams such as Electrical, Electronics, Electrical Communications, Computer Science, Telecommunications, Information Technology, or Instrumentation.
  • Scientific Assistant (IMD): A Bachelor’s Degree in Science with Physics as a core subject, OR a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Applications, Electronics, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering, Instrumentation, Information Technology, Telecommunication Engineering, or Communication Engineering.

Qualifications obtained through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) or online platforms for core technical programs such as Engineering are generally invalid unless explicitly permitted by UGC regulations or court directives.

Age Limit

The cut-off date to calculate age limits is 01.08.2026.

Important Note: Age relaxation benefits are strictly restricted to the applicants themselves and are not applicable to the dependents (sons, daughters) of Ex-Servicemen.

Application Fee

  • Fee Amount: ₹100 (One Hundred Rupees)
  • Exempted Categories: Women applicants, Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), and Ex-Servicemen (ESM) are fully exempted from paying any application fee.
  • Payment Mode: Fee can be processed strictly through online methods including BHIM UPI, Net Banking, or Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, and RuPay Debit cards.
  • Payment Window: Payments must be successfully completed by 23.09.2026 (23:00 hours).
  • Refund Policy: The application fee is non-refundable and non-transferable under any circumstances.

Salary

Selected candidates will receive appointment to Group ‘B’ positions. Their pay will be governed by Pay Level-6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) Pay Matrix, with a standard scale of ₹35,400 to ₹1,12,400. In addition to basic pay, employees are eligible for allowances including Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), and Transport Allowance (TA) as defined by the respective recruiting departments.

Selection Process

The recruitment process for SSC JE 2026 features multiple sequential phases:

  1. Paper-I (Computer Based Examination):
    This is a qualifying exam consisting of objective, multiple-choice questions. It features three components:

    • General Intelligence & Reasoning (50 questions / 50 marks)
    • General Awareness (50 questions / 50 marks)
    • Domain Specific Subject (Civil / Electrical / Mechanical / Telecom) (100 questions / 100 marks)

    The exam duration is 2 hours (2 hours and 40 minutes for candidates eligible for a scribe). Negative marking of 0.25 marks applies for each wrong response.

  2. Paper-II (Computer Based Examination):
    Candidates who qualify Paper-I will appear for this paper, which tests core engineering subjects in detail (100 questions / 300 marks). The duration is 2 hours (2 hours and 40 minutes for scribe-eligible candidates). There is a negative marking of 1 mark for each incorrect answer.
  3. Document Verification (DV):
    Provisionally selected candidates must produce all relevant original documents (educational, experience, category, and identity certificates) for screening by their respective allocating departments.
  4. Physical and Medical Examination:
    Candidates designated for specific departments, such as the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) / GREF, must fulfill specified physical and medical fitness parameters.

Separate final merit rankings are issued for JE (Civil), JE (Electrical & Mechanical), Scientific Assistant (IMD), and JE (Telecom). Question papers for both CBTs are set in English and Hindi.

How to Apply for SSC JE Recruitment 2026

  1. Go to the updated SSC official portal: ssc.gov.in.
  2. Complete the One-Time Registration (OTR) process. Please note that older registration accounts created on the previous website (ssc.nic.in) are invalid.
  3. Log in using your fresh credentials and locate the application link for the Junior Engineer Examination 2026. Candidates can also apply using the official “mySSC” mobile application.
  4. Fill out all relevant personal, contact, and academic fields. Carefully choose your technical paper subject and preferred departments, as these options cannot be altered later.
  5. Upload a recent photograph and signature as per prescribed guidelines, or opt for Aadhaar-based verification.
  6. Complete the application fee payment online (if applicable).
  7. Verify all information, submit the form, and download a printout of the confirmation page for future reference.
